Turkmenistan FlagInteresting article from Transitions Online about the changes in Turkmenistan since the death of President for Life Saparmurat “Turkmenbashi” Niyazov kicked it approximately a year ago.  Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, the new President of Turkmenistan, has shown some small signs of opening up the country to the world.

Time will tell if these are serious, if not very slow, moves towards liberalization or just strategic reforms to release pressure while he consolidates his hold on power.
