Andrew G. Mandelbaum
Andrew G. Mandelbaum is a second-year graduate student in Georgetown’s Democracy and Governance Program. Prior to enrolling at Georgetown, he was a research assistant and language specialist at the U.S. Institute of Peace where he worked on the Muslim World Initiative’s Opposition Movements in the Arab World Project.
After graduating from Duke University ‘03 with a B.A. in Public Policy Studies, Mandelbaum spent the next two years studying Arabic at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London and in Amman, Jordan, where he also worked with a Jordanian NGO. This past summer, he studied Arabic at Middlebury College on a FLAS Fellowship.
Mandelbaum’s own research has focused on the framing activities of Morocco’s Islamist PJD and the impact of informal politics on Morocco’s formal political institutions. A New Jersey native, Mandelbaum lives in Washington, D.C. with 3 roommates and Norm, a 50 lbs ball of meat that passes for a dog. Mandelbaum’s Arabic name is Mustapha and his Chinese name is Xiao Hu Zi.
